Together with MOA, the LV Foundation did put up good works by name-brand artists. I had to say I am not crazy about the curating, but if not for LV, we in HK wont even have a chance to see such a collection. So what's HK$5m from our government? I doubt if even we give $5m to any HK curators that they can put up a similar show.
Yes the opening felt more like a fashion show than an art/culture event. And you know what, that's free PR! Art, fashion, who's putting in boundaries these days?! And if art is "polluted" by commerce and fashion this way, then so be it. Myself for one was ready to go into an LV shop after seeing Murakami's video - and what's wrong with that?
And yes, the "HK Sevens" artists are upstairs, and given a much smaller budget (which I heard was already much better than the usual already!!) - but they are in the company of Gursky, Gilbert & George, Yang Fudong, Basquiat, etc. Come on!
So, stop complaining, enjoy, and hope there's more coming!
