Art Journal #49: Prada Transformer

Finally got to see it. Amazing! Loved the concept. I am no architect, so I dont know if this is an old idea - one structure, but 4 spaces, for 4 different uses. Every wall become the floor, and vice versa. Every space, in its rotated form, feels different, yet "retains the memories of previous projects" (how poetic!) Zaha Hadid's Channel Mobile Art shell might be a "prettier" structure, but pales in comparison at conceptual level vs. OMA's work. I am such a big fan of Koolhas!

I went during the "third stage" - so this time it's an art show (following the first show which was fashion, second which was film). Featuring Natalie Djurberg whose work I have seen a lot recently - at Venice Biennale and then Art Basel. Her 5 video works are all short (5-7 mins) and engaging. I find video works easy to show but be difficult to grap full attention, but Djurberg's work is engaging and captivating. Through "innocent-looking" clay figures, she presents grosstique, violent, disturbing themes around exploitation of human/animal bodies, environmental disasters, racial/sexual tensions in a dream-like and surreal setting.

What if WKCD had a structure like this? Will HK people "get" it? It's not a "pleasing" object (of course it's not ugly). Even for me, I think I like the concept more than the in-real form. But objects come and go, and concepts stay in your mind! I see post-Lehman savviness in design: economical yet highly functional, physically-imposing yet easy to transport, elegant/sleek yet environmentally friendly. Verdict - if HK is given this, we should take it!
