Art Journal #26: Berkeley Art Museum

Finally get to see Xu Bing's Project Forest in real, in the "Artists Respond to a Changing Planet" show. Of the 10 or so pieces on display, his work clearly stands out (no bias!), in terms of depth and thoughtfulness. Its not just a documentary made on site, or reflection (angst?) about how we are not taking care of our world. Xu Bing mixes word-based structure, creativity/stimulus to kids, education, and finance all in one. Besides his, I also like Dario Robleto's work. Its a very "female" piece (if I may stereo-type), lots of personal memories, and liberal use of truly uncoventional and sometimes unreal materials - eg, tear drops, human hair, voice of a widow, fragments of a human skeleton, etc. Together, they make a powerful piece that leaves an impression.

The funny aside is that I asked 2 students in Berkeley, and both didnt know about the BAM Galleries! Clearly not much marketing within campus....also there are SO many Asians - amazing
