Art Journal #35: China Pavilion

The only work worthnoting is Zeng Fanzhi's. He took books about West-East art, society, history, etc, and "sandwiched in" fragments of his own brushstroke landscape paintings, then make them into nice classical thread-bound books. I thought that was an interesting concept, that is not oil on canvas, sth he did just for the Biennale but still very much "Zeng Fanzhi".

But beyond that, I didnt like Qiu Zhije's piece (and Qiu didnt seem to like it either). Zeng Hao's 2D turned 3D work is interesting but OK. Dont know what Fang Lijun is trying to do with his microscopic faces tucked under an oven/tunnel.

People said the curators werent great, and werent popular personalities - so cant quite draw in all the key artists to come (eg, Zeng didnt come). Well, at least the site is interesting - it's a desserted oil depot. Hope China has more interesting works next time....
