Art Journal #51: Ai Weiwei @ Mori Art Museum

I guess I should have written about this long ago! But somehow felt since so many people have written about it...I'd be lazy once. Then, this is my art journal, and I just went to Tokyo again last weekend and almost went to see the show again (!!), so just for the record, here we go.... this is the conclusion - I liked it!

I have looked forward to the exhibition, his first major solo exhibition in Asia, since early 2009 when I first read about it in AAP. Then it's getting to know Mori's curator Kataoka Mami @ Venice. And "getting myself invited" to the opening. It's fun!

Works wise, I have pretty much seen all of them, but on paper. Come to think of it, he's probably among the few artists where I know almost the full body of work. But I almost never saw them in real, except for the occasional pieces in auctions. Loved the China map craved into temple wood, the Huali wood 3D hexagon, and the "shocking" Drop a Han Urn photos. Loved the colorful thousand-year vases in industrial paint, but did thought they will be bigger, but they are SMALL in real! That's probably the only disappointment, if I can call it that. Otherwise, a fantastic show!!
