Went for my virgin treking trip to MacLehose Trail #1 under 33C heat in sunny August! Amazing scenery. But even the heads-up on the 3.5 hours walk from Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke didn't prepare us for the walk - we ended up taking a taxi after 1 hour! (still think that's a wise decision though!) Long Ke was wonderfully secluded - and I am totally toasted after 2 hours under the sun.
Some mandatory post-trip research here: MacLehose Trail is named after the longest serving governor in HK, himself an enthusiastic hiker. A writer describes this as "the best gift that the British-HK Govt has given to the HK people". It was opened in October 1979, and is a hiking trail that crosses much of the NT, stretching 100km. It offers one of the most varied countryside sceneries, from the east coast (where the Trail begins) which is indented and wild, to the central mountains which include many of HK's highest peaks, to the western part where the Trail winds to its end, with impressive valley reservoirs.
A must see for all HK-ers! (But honestly, best not to do under 33C heat...)
