Guangzhou impressions

According to my Chn colleagues, GZ in prep for Asia Games hasnt really changed nearly as much as SH during EXPO. There does seem to be tons of construction still going on, when the Games is one month away. Granted, EXPO is far higher profile and international.

A completely different observation - its nice to fly into GZ and speak Cantonese (vs. SH BJ). But service level still left much to be desired - as typical in China. Westin concierge is clueless, didnt know where the Zaha Hadid opera house and new Guangdong Museum are - these must be the biggest attractions in town now?! Taxi drivers of course didnt know where they are going. My airport car pickup was 20mins late when I was in a mad rush to a client meeting. The haze is really bad - I felt I can hardly breathe, and of course the 32C heat doesnt help (why is it 32C when passed mid-Autumn Fest?!)

The only bright spot is the Cantonese greeting at the custom. And yes, food was far better than last time - though I am now sick from the lunch cooked w tons of oil...GZ style cooking?
