Gagosian knows how to throw a great opening + party! Most gallery openings will be open to all (even if they said RSVP), but there are people holding guest list at the entrance at Gagosian's new space at Pedder Bldg that gave it "more exclusivity". Filling up the impressive, spacious gallery thats more NY than HK (we are so used to the confined gallery spaces on Hollywood Rd now!) is a Daimen Hirst solo called "Forgotten Promises".
Have to say the works are truly, truly horrifying - the butterflies in metallic paint stuck on canvas, Hirst's return to traditional paintings taking butterflies as his motif, and the gaudy gold statues/skeletons, not to mention the pink diamond encrusted baby skull called "For Heaven's Sake" (of which title I agree with...really, Mr Hirst, for heaven's sake...)
The party that started at 1030pm at Sevva, on the other hand, is A list, well attended, and Tatler like. And probably cost like HK$1m. Murakami was there. Hirst was there too, but I didnt see him.
Its a great thing that Ben Brown, Gagosian, etc, are now in HK. Ben Brown's Picasso show is the kind never seen before in HK. So despite a horrible first show in one of the best gallery spaces in HK, I think most still look forward to the next show from the NY art giant.
