Art Journal #27: SF MOMA

Not as good as I thought. But William Kentridge was good and very different. He mixes sketches, opera, film, moving puppets, and video projection....into a fascinating installation that remain me of Indonesian puppet/shadow show, and a bit of Qiu Zhijie (in his methodic sketching of installation concepts). His pencil sketches of himself are playful and impactful at the same time. Otherwise, nothing too spectacular.

Did see Duchamp's famous urinal for the first time in real! The father of "readymades" that lead the way for many for years to come. "It's art not because I made it, but because I choose it to be". Apparently he used a fake name for his piece, and the work was thrown out of a Parisian exhibition last minute because of the controversial and unorthodox nature. Then he made 4 more replicas - one of which is in SF MOMA now!
