Still recalled that I was very surprised to see a Chinese artist in Lourve 2 years ago. That was probably one of the first time I saw a Yan Pei-Ming work, I think it's a Mao in red. On Zhang Wei's referral, I went to SFAI where Hou Hanru leads exhibition program to see the new show. Yan Pei-Ming's oils are giantic (2x a person's height!) and at that scale, monumental esp with the heavy texture. The watercolor babies are actually very interesting - they felt like those X-ray pictures of babies when they are still in a mother's womb. This is Ming's new experimentation with the watercolor medium. Painting US dollar notes was fun; and I did that when I was young too!! Well I did HK dollar of course, only $10 though - but did recalled my teacher liked it!! * GRIN * Apparently Ming spent a short period in a residency at SFAI and completed some of the new work made just for this show. Another aside, he was recently invited by the Lourve to "create/define confrontations between contemporary artists and earlier masters", this time based off Lourve's most famous painting - Mona Lisa. Interesting!
Hou Hanru was very nice and knowledgeable. We spent half an hour talking about the HK art scene and his expectations - and concerns (rightly so). He seems to really know everyone in HK and Mainland in the art scene!! We need someone like that to come and create a strong program for M+
