This is insane news. Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 13 of the last 20 years under house arrest, but the present term was due to end this month, on 27 May. But now she's charged with the violation of "allowing an outsider to stay". An American wore flippers and swam across the lake where Aung San's house is, and "broke in" (I still remember when I visited Burma last year that the roads around her house were guarded and traffic restricted; and the lonely house stood there, with nothing much around it except for the US Embassy from afar, right by the lake. We were asked not to take photos - repeatly asked not to. Our driver and tour guide didnt want to get into any trouble - which it seems they clearly will, if they drove foreigners to her house and take pictures).
When the man entered her house, she asked him to leave, but he didnt until 2 days later. A US embassy spokesman said "(the man) would not go into any details about his stay in the house. He seems to have a very strong religious reason for his actions." Aung San's lawyer said the man is "a fool" and "is to be blamed for this". It's clear that the military government is finding every excuse they can to keep Aung San under house arrest forever. What will be the reaction of the Burmese people this time? Will they rise?
Prayers go to Aung San, and the people of Burma.
