Art Journal #29: ArtHK

ArtHK was one of the year's most anticipated event in town. Met expectations, I think. Gallery owners insist they did reasonably OK. Good traffic. But by looking at the stickers (which might not be good indication of what's sold) what did well seem to be smaller ticket items. For example, Hirst's Other Criteria shop did good business, with prints ranging from US$1500 to $7000. (They sold 10 of the diamond crust skull silkprint at US$1450; ed. 1000).

The locals are the locals; the real delightful surprises were the foreign galleries - one from Helsinki brought interesting multimedia work. Wada from Japan brought 6-7 Ishida's. I have never seen so many Ishida's in one place! (But they are not for sale). Chow Chun Fai's performance was his all-out act and cross-over with Shanghai Tang, and was fantastic. I bought a Gonkar Gyatso print - always wanted one of his buddha/kid's sticker work, guess I will settle for a print for now - apparently he didnt do any original work for whole of last year as he prepares for the Venice Biennale. Charwei Tsai's work at Osage was delightful - and a really pleasant, easy-going girl. Loved the Deyrolle work where she write the heart sutra on a dear skull from the Hunting Museum - but too bad that was auctioned (for charity though), and the next ones will still be sold by Deyrolle (actually interesting to hear they are going contemporary too). Liked Shen Shaomin's melting Mao too. Didnt know the Bonsai work that I saw in BJ was Shen's work as well.
