More along his series of photo/writing works, Zhang Xiaogang this time painted and wroted on metal sheets processed with familiar old Chn living room images in the background. The text is taken from Macro Polo's journal and what he saw in the Far East.
I felt Yue Minjun totally lost direction after his smily face works, his dinosaurs were horrendous, and the maze series made most viewers completely lost. But I thought this set of 10 paintings were visually impactful - still mazes, but with ancient paintings of modern masters like Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian and Xu Beihong.
In another hall, Wang Guangyi's installation was "angry" - he reproduced paintings of the Old Summer Palace, burned holes in them, and put them on floors littered with debris, reminscent of the burnt down Summer Palace. He said he's recreating this "crime scene" and giving this back to the West "as a gift" to show them what they've done to China. WOW! (Many of his work after Great Criticism hasnt received much press, but I actually think Wang Guangyi still do good work)
