Art journal #144: Lucian Freud @ National Portrait Gallery

Rare to see so many of Freud's works up close! Breaktaking to see how each stroke is applied masterfully. He has always been choosy about his subject. He said he only want to paint people he knows; he rarely accept commission. He want the seater to have their own universe to dive into during his many seatings for any single work to get it completed.

But its the story behind the painting, the jumping out of the characters that made it special: like his portrayal of the Queen in her old age looking distant and alone; and his lovely depiction of his close frds and lovers.

Of course Freud is also someone whom Chn artists like Zeng Fanzhi and Liu Xiaodong mentioned a lot or people make comparisons to. Cannot help to see the similarity in Freud's early works with big eyes/hands drawn with much finer brushes and Zeng's works; and Freud's bold brushstrokes and what Liu has mastered.
