Art journal #99: Popping Up at HKAC

Impressed with what HKAC pulled off. Make me rethink what's good to do at Para/Site. One show a year, if a good one, matters a lot more than a series of mediocre ones? Also, without good PR, doesnt matter what shows you have? Look at Hope and Glory @ Artistree?!

Obviously Fumio is a super-star brand name, as Director of my fav art space, Mori Museum in Tokyo. The show brings together an interesting group of artists. Bringing Tsang Kin Wah's work from Lyon back to HK is great for all those that didnt get to go to the Hon Hanru's curated event last year. I love Yin Xuzhen - so its excellent to see a few of her suitcase pieces in a room of her own (and these were great ones too!). Other works were honestly less intriguing, and I didnt find the exhibition theme that compelling.

Granted, HKAC is not an easy place to show in, and its not cheap for galleries or the independents - apparently its HK$140,000 for 1 week. I went to the Popping Up show another time after the opening night - its totally quiet. HKAC is not that out of the way in Wanchai - so, we dont like art in HK, or not enough PR (not the case, I read about this show in multiple mags), or?
